Teen Smoking Trends
Tobacco is one of the most profitable industries in the world. It’s also one of the deadliest. Tobacco products kill approximately six million people around the globe every year, including 443,000 Americans. Unchecked, tobacco-related deaths will increase to more than eight million a year by 2030, and 80 percent of those deaths will occur in the developing world. Smoking sucks.
Ironically, you won’t find many tobacco executives who smoke cigarettes. They know better. “That’s a right we reserve for the young, poor, black and stupid,” said one tobacco executive in a closed-door meeting. Teen smoking and addiction is critical to their survival.
Not only does tobacco generate billions of dollars for stockholders, it generates billions of dollars for governments. In fact, governments save billions more when smokers die prematurely and forfeit their pensions and retirement benefits.
In a 1999 report, Philip Morris bragged to the Czech Republic that these are “positive benefits of smoking.”
